Small Business trust audits – Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help answer all your accounting questions and provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision.

A trust audit refers to the examination and assessment of a trust’s financial and operational activities. A trust is a legal arrangement where a person or entity (known as the trustee) holds assets or property on behalf of another party (known as the beneficiary). Trusts are commonly used for estate planning, asset protection, charitable purposes, or managing funds for minors.

As an essential financial assessment tool, a trust account audit serves the purpose of ensuring that solicitors and estate agents comply with established regulations regarding fiduciary responsibilities. Such audits allow for the thorough examination of relevant financial transactions and records to identify inconsistencies, non-compliance, or fraud. Not only does this help to protect the perpetrators from unethical or illegal financial practices, but it also safeguards clients from the negative impact of fraudulent activities carried out by professionals entrusted with their funds.

With a trust account audit, stakeholders can rest assured knowing that their financial transactions are being handled with the highest level of transparency and compliance, resulting in increased confidence and trust in the profession.

As a solicitor or estate agent in Victoria, it’s important to understand your legal obligations regarding trust accounts. Generally, trust accounts need to be audited once per year.
